How to make a gift box with a zipper?

Hey there! I’m a supplier in the gift box business, and today I’m super stoked to share with you how to make a gift box with a zipper. It’s a cool and practical way to present gifts, and it’s not as hard as you might think. Gift Box

Why Choose a Gift Box with a Zipper?

Before we jump into the how – to, let me tell you why a gift box with a zipper is a great idea. First off, it’s super convenient. You can easily open and close the box, which is perfect if you want to add or remove something from the gift later. It also gives a more modern and sleek look compared to traditional gift boxes. And let’s face it, a well – designed gift box with a zipper can really up the ante when it comes to the overall presentation of the gift.

Materials You’ll Need

Alright, so what do you need to make this awesome gift box?

  • Cardboard: You can use thick cardboard for the base of the box. It gives the box structure and durability. You can find cardboard at your local craft store or even reuse some from old boxes at home.
  • Zipper: Choose a zipper that’s the right length for your box. You can get zippers in different colors and styles, so pick one that suits the look you’re going for.
  • Scissors or a craft knife: You’ll need these to cut the cardboard and the fabric (if you’re using it). A craft knife gives a more precise cut, but scissors work just fine too.
  • Glue or double – sided tape: This is for attaching the different parts of the box together. Glue gives a stronger hold, but double – sided tape is quicker and easier.
  • Ruler and pencil: To measure and mark where you need to cut and fold the cardboard.
  • Fabric (optional): If you want to give your box a more stylish look, you can cover the cardboard with fabric. Just pick a fabric you like, and make sure it’s not too thin.

Step 1: Design and Measure

The first step is to design your box. Decide on the size and shape you want. A simple rectangular box is a great place to start. Use your ruler and pencil to measure and mark the cardboard.
Let’s say you want to make a box that’s 6 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3 inches tall. You’ll need to draw a pattern on the cardboard.

  • Draw a rectangle that’s 6 inches by (4 + 3+4 + 3) inches. The extra 3 – inch sections are for the height of the box on each side. Then mark where you’ll fold the cardboard to form the sides of the box. You’ll also need to cut out small squares at the corners to make it easier to fold the box into shape.
  • For the zipper, measure the length you need. If you’re putting the zipper on the top of the box, it should be a bit longer than the length of the open part of the box top. Usually, an extra inch on each side is good.

Step 2: Cutting the Cardboard

Once you’ve marked everything out, it’s time to cut the cardboard. If you’re using a craft knife, be really careful. Make slow, steady cuts along the lines you’ve drawn. If you’re using scissors, just follow the lines as best you can. After cutting out the main shape of the box, cut out the small squares at the corners.

Step 3: Folding the Box

Now, it’s time to fold the box. Use the lines you marked earlier as guides. Fold the cardboard along the lines to form the sides of the box. You can use a bone folder or the edge of a ruler to make the folds nice and sharp. Once you’ve folded all the sides, use glue or double – sided tape to attach the edges together. Make sure the corners are well – sealed so the box is sturdy.

Step 4: Attaching the Zipper

This is the fun part! First, place the zipper on the top of the box where you want it to go. You can use pins to hold it in place temporarily. Then, start attaching the zipper to the box. If you’re using fabric – covered cardboard, you can sew the zipper on. If it’s just cardboard, you can use glue or double – sided tape.

  • Start at one end of the zipper. Apply a thin layer of glue or stick the double – sided tape to the edge of the cardboard. Then carefully press the zipper onto the glued or taped part. Make sure it’s straight and evenly attached. Work your way along the zipper, pressing it firmly onto the cardboard as you go.
  • Once the zipper is attached, test it out to make sure it opens and closes smoothly.

Step 5: Optional – Covering with Fabric

If you decided to use fabric, now’s the time to cover the box. Cut the fabric so it’s a bit bigger than the box on all sides. Then, use glue or double – sided tape to attach the fabric to the box. Start with one side, and smooth the fabric out as you go to avoid any wrinkles. Wrap the fabric around the edges of the box and attach it to the inside. You can use a small brush to apply glue to the edges of the fabric if needed.

Tips and Tricks

  • When cutting the cardboard, take your time. A clean cut will make the box look much better in the end.
  • If you’re having trouble getting the zipper to stay straight while you’re attaching it, use a few extra pins to hold it in place.
  • Don’t be afraid to get creative with the design. You can add decorations like ribbons, stickers, or even paint to the box.
